Glazed slot - connecting the existing to a new Fellows Dining Room

The Fellows’ Dining Hall and Kitchen project was delivered by Alan Berman with BGS Architects, in 2011. The Fellows’ Dining Hall was inserted into a double height gap between the original dining hall and the range of the college’s Back Quad, so that the external stone walls and classical features of the college were retained within the new interior.

A full length roof light allows natural light into the hall while a suspended “barrel” ceiling gives the space a modern yet gracious feel. New space for the College kitchen was created by excavating under the Grade I listed building and the adjacent Back Quad. Original arches, believed to have been designed by Hawksmoor, were uncovered in the design the design stage and incorporated into the dining hall to create a dramatic architectural feature.
