Strategic study - college and gardens
Green Templeton, Oxford University’s newest graduate college, is home to 600 graduate students studying human welfare, social sciences, medicine, education, environmental sciences and social policy.
We have been supporting the college to review its estate, and seek opportunities to make the best use of its sites since 2015. Part of our work has been to define a clear project brief, and we ran a design competition for a new mixed purpose development for the central Grade I listed site in central Oxford.
Looking onto the famous eighteenth-century Radcliffe Observatory at the heart of Green Templeton known as the “tower of the winds,” the scheme will have to meet a number of challenges. This is the last piece of land the College can develop, so the design must maximise the potential of the site, harmonise with the architecture of the College and its surroundings — while maintaining views of the Observatory from all sides.
Feilden Fowles’ architects won the competition to design the new student accommodation wing that will replace two existing tennis courts and were on the site of the College's former kitchen gardens.
Our ongoing involvement is continuing as the project evolves, assisting with design reviews and project planning. The scheme is expected to be submitted for planning permission in the spring and to complete in 2021.
